New Delhi : In a move that has sparked concern among residents, demolition notices were served to several houses and shops in the Khizerbaba Colony area of Jamia Nagar, Okhla, for allegedly encroaching upon land owned by the Uttar Pradesh Irrigation Department, reported the Print.
The notices, dated May 22, were pasted on properties identified as illegal constructions. They state, “Encroachment has been done in Okhla, Khizerbaba Colony, belonging to the Irrigation Control Department of Uttar Pradesh. The houses and shops on this land are illegal and should be removed in the next 15 days.”
This action follows a Supreme Court directive issued on May 8, which instructed the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to demolish unauthorised structures in Okhla village in accordance with legal procedures.
Residents in the area expressed anxiety over the sudden notices, with many questioning the timing and alleging lack of prior intimation. Civil rights groups have also raised concerns about the impact of the drive on poor families, many of whom have lived in the area for decades.
Authorities have not yet clarified whether rehabilitation or compensation will be provided to affected residents.
