New Delhi: Thousands of members of the Confederation of Dalit, OBC, Minorities and Adivasi Organizations gathered at Ambedkar Bhawan on Sunday to pledge to save the Constitution. The crowd wore identical Ambedkar masks as they recited the pledge before the statue of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, turning the venue into a sea of blue and creating one of the most striking images of recent protests.
The event was originally planned at Ramlila Maidan, but the Delhi Police denied permission after a reported complaint from a BJP leader. DOMA leaders described the denial as another example of tightening limits on peaceful assembly. They noted that the All India Muslim Personal Law Board was also refused permission last month for a rally against the Waqf Amendment Act 2025.
Despite the last minute venue shift, thousands reached Ambedkar Bhawan. Some supporters who arrived at Ramlila Maidan said they were mistreated by police. Authorities have not commented on these allegations. Heavy security was deployed around Ambedkar Bhawan, and DOMA said police presence prevented participants from marching.
Addressing the gathering, DOMA National Chairman Dr. Udit Raj said the refusal to grant permission reflects a growing authoritarian tendency. He said constitutional institutions have weakened and mass movements are needed to defend democracy. He alleged rising discrimination against Muslims and harassment of Christians under conversion claims. He urged Dalits, OBCs, minorities and Adivasis to strengthen grassroots networks to safeguard constitutional rights.
DOMA leaders said national events in Delhi have limited impact. They encouraged members to mobilize in their regions and advance Ambedkarite values, social justice and scientific thinking. They warned that fanaticism and superstition promoted by political and media groups threaten democratic foundations.
During the ceremony, thousands pledged to support DOMA’s demands. These include raising the reservation cap above 50 percent, a caste census, stopping interference in the Waqf Board, ending privatization and ensuring reservation in privatized sectors, reservation in the higher judiciary, filling vacant government posts, security of land and education rights and ending contract based employment. They also spoke about restoring the old pension scheme, protecting tribal rights and ensuring minimum wages for farmers.
DOMA said the government rejects these demands and vowed to continue a nationwide campaign. The Delhi Police and the BJP have not yet issued statements on the permission denial or related allegations.
