Dr. Abdul Qadeer: a Man with a Mission

Dr. Abdul Qadeer was born in 1961 in remote Bidar, a town in Karnataka close to where the boundary of the State meets the boundaries of Maharashtra and Telangana. Bidar boasts a rich history, having been established as the capital of the Bahmani Kingdom in 1427 by Sultan Ahmad Shah I; its architectural grandeur can still be seen. Bidar fell to Emperor Aurangzeb in 1657 and was formally annexed to the Mughal Empire in 1686. With the disintegration of the Mughal Empire, Bidar became part of the territory ruled by the Nizam of Hyderabad from 1724 until 1948, when it was incorporated into the Union of India.

Young Abdul Qadeer imbibed his values from his parents early in life and remains an exemplar of intellectual and moral integrity and commitment to discipline, justice, social responsibility and service to humanity. He qualified as an engineer and his technical expertise won him a position with Marubeni Corporation, a prestigious Japanese multinational. This was followed with employment in Saudi Arabia, before returning to India, driven by a larger social purpose of educational empowerment of marginalized communities.

Commitment brought him back; passion moved him forward. In 1989 he embarked upon his chosen path with just 18 students and a small room in Bidar. Absence of infrastructure, paucity of resources, but plenty of doubters and detractors, did not deter him from persevering with amazing courage and indomitable determination. What started as a ripple in a pond slowly gathered the momentum of a wave – a rising tide that began to lift many boats.

In this arduous journey, many milestones were reached and many barriers were breached. Success followed success- the ‘Barakah Effect’ was manifest. Sincere intentions began bearing fruit on the tree of convictions. Eleven years after commencement, a Pre-University College was established. A year later a Shaheen student successfully got a Government Medical College seat. A major innovation project was launched in 2003: the Academic Intensive Care unit. The purpose was to intensively coach Madrasa students and school drop-outs so that they could be integrated into mainstream schooling. This project has been an outstanding success. Several students tutored through this scheme went on to excel in their studies and careers. This initiative demonstrated Dr. Abdul Qadeer’s ability to find opportunity in adversity and convert social challenges into sustainable systemic solutions. A Degree College was started in 2014 and two years later the Shaheen campus was shifted to the more spacious surroundings
of Shaheen Nagar. In 2021 another innovation followed with the integration of U.P.S.C. foundational courses into the Bachelor’s program for students who aspire for careers in government.

Dr. Abdul Qadeer’s work promotes inclusive education and social cohesion, overcoming linguistic and cultural barriers. His institutions welcome students from diverse backgrounds- socio-economic, cultural and regional. They emphasize acceptance of diversity, coexistence and mutual respect in a harmonious environment.

Dr. Abdul Qadeer’s vision is not restricted to India alone. He envisages a globalized role for Shaheen. Towards this objective, the first GCC center of Shaheen was established in 2024 in Dammam, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This was followed with the establishment of Shaheen Medical College in Dushanbe, Tajikistan in 2025. These are only the first two steps in what could be a long journey to extend the Shaheen footprint on foreign shores.

Going hand-in-hand with his educational endeavors are several social reform campaigns including those promoting awareness against the consumption of harmful substances such as drugs, tobacco and gutkha. He also performs a pivotal role in promoting healthy living, discouragement of extravagant expenditure in weddings and highlighting ecological concerns and environmental responsibility.

Realizing the sub-optimal utilization of space in masajid, he implemented an action program to use them as centers for community development, beyond their traditional use for ritual worship. The participating mosques now have Quran study circles, moral and social education initiatives, community counseling and welfare support, in addition to doubling up as study spaces facilitated by purpose-designed, foldable furniture.

Along with such outstanding achievements came due recognition. He was honored with the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award in 2013 and an Honorary Doctorate in 2015 in recognition of his services to the cause of education. He also received the Karnataka Government Bal Vikas Academy Award and more recently the highly prestigious Sir Syed National Excellence Award. This was a fitting honor bestowed by the Aligarh Muslim University upon a man who can justifiably be called the Sir Syed of our age.

At a time when the community is sorely in need of leadership and role models, Dr. Abdul Qadeer stands out as a beacon of hope. No doubt his achievements to date are many, yet there is still a lot of potential to be realized. Many milestones remain to be reached; many hurdles to be crossed; many challenges to be overcome. The higher reaches of a summit are always harder to climb and need a lot of courage, energy, motivation and perseverance. He has them all in ample measure. What we, as a community, can offer is our goodwill and trust. Let us create an ecosystem that provides support to those who dare to be the change makers we keep wishing for.

“The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep”.
