New Delhi: Eminent scholars, political leaders, and social thinkers gathered at the Constitution Club of India to celebrate the life and contributions of Dr. Mohammad Manzoor Alam, founder of the Institute of Objective Studies (IOS). The event marked the launch of journalist A.U. Asif’s book Dr. Mohammad Manzoor Alam: Empowering the Marginalised, which chronicles the scholar’s decades-long work for education, justice, and social harmony.
In a heartfelt message, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim described Dr. Alam as “a movement that will live forever.” Recalling a friendship spanning four decades, he called Dr. Alam “a visionary leader who dedicated his life to empowering the marginalised and upholding the values of knowledge and justice.”
The event opened with Quranic recitation by Dr. Nikhath Hussain Nadwi, followed by remarks from Dr. Z.M. Khan. Former Union Minister Salman Khurshid released the book and hailed Dr. Alam as “a beacon of light” whose establishment of the IOS set a high standard for intellectual and social excellence in India.
Professor Omar Hasan Kasule of the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT), USA, described Dr. Alam as a man who turned knowledge into a tool for transformation. “He gave up comfort in Saudi Arabia to return home and serve his people,” he said. Professor Amitabh Kundu recalled Dr. Alam’s inclusive vision during the Sachar Committee years, while Professor Faizan Mustafa highlighted IOS as “a model of knowledge creation” that deserves to evolve into a university.
International participants, including Dr. Abdullah Matouq Al-Matouq from Kuwait and Sri Lankan scholar Dr. A.J.M. Zaheer, praised Dr. Alam’s global influence. Spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar lauded his efforts to bridge religious and social divides, calling him “a guiding light for harmony.”
Former Chief Election Commissioner Dr. S.Y. Quraishi described Dr. Alam as “a pioneer of research culture in India.” Veteran journalist John Dayal and Professor Akhtarul Wasey stressed that his work should inspire other marginalised groups to build similar institutions.
In his address, Professor Afzal Wani, Chairman of IOS, said the institute represents “a movement to see and show truth as it is.” He reminded attendees that the Fiqh Academy of India and All India Milli Council were also born from Dr. Alam’s vision.
The event ended with a vote of thanks by Professor Haseena Hashia, who said Dr. Alam’s legacy would continue to inspire future generations to pursue justice, unity, and empowerment through knowledge.
