Dr. Sabeena M: Lakshadweep’s First PhD Holder Inspires with Her Groundbreaking Research

Dr. Sabeena M. has etched her name in history as the first woman from Lakshadweep to earn a doctorate, overcoming societal disapproval and personal challenges. Defending her PhD thesis on Aquaculture and Microbiology last month, she has become a beacon of inspiration for her island community, reports the ATV News.

Her groundbreaking research, titled “Zonation Patterns, Composition, and Diversity of Macroalgal Communities in the Lakshadweep Archipelago,” sheds light on the unique marine ecosystem of the islands. Sabeena, 35, hailing from the scenic Androth Island, faced significant resistance and skepticism throughout her educational journey. “What will you, as a woman, achieve by studying aquaculture and microbiology?” was a recurring question she had to counter during her college years.

Despite the odds, she pursued her passion. Her journey began with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in marine sciences, accomplished as one of only four students in her cohort. In 2014, she joined a local school as a fisheries teacher. Guided by mentors like aquatic biologist Idris Babu and Dr. S. Suresh Kumar of Kerala Malayalam University, Sabeena embarked on her PhD journey in 2016.

Her research involved extensive travel across 12 islands, including uninhabited ones, to collect marine plant and algae samples. Juggling her academic pursuits with family responsibilities, she often took her infant daughter along to Kochi for research work, with the unwavering support of her husband and in-laws.

Her findings highlight significant ecological changes in the region. Of the 182 species of algae previously recorded in Lakshadweep, only 96 remain due to marine mining and over-reliance on algae for turtle skin. However, her study also uncovered seven new species, enriching the understanding of the archipelago’s biodiversity.

Dr. Sabeena’s contributions have been lauded by officials and researchers, with her work seen as a critical resource for marine conservation. At her felicitation ceremony, she reflected on her journey, emphasising the importance of perseverance and support from mentors and family.

Her story is not just about academic achievement but also about resilience and breaking barriers, making her a role model for future generations in Lakshadweep and beyond.
