Hamirpur, Uttar Pradesh – A 71-year-old Muslim woman, identified as Munni, was briefly detained by the police for offering Namaz near the District Magistrate’s office in Hamirpur. A video of the incident, which went viral on social media, led to swift police action, resulting in her arrest.
However, Munni was released after authorities confirmed that she was mentally unstable and had been undergoing treatment for the past four years. She hails from the Sufiganj area of the city.
A police official stated, “On March 31, we received reports of a woman offering Namaz near the DM’s office. Acting on instructions from the District Magistrate, a case was registered against her, and further legal action is being taken.” Additionally, home guards on duty at the DM’s office were reportedly suspended for alleged negligence.
Hamirpur Superintendent of Police Diksha Sharma confirmed that Munni was initially charged with trespassing, but upon learning about her mental condition, she was released.
The incident has sparked widespread criticism on social media. Journalist Vijetha Singh remarked, “You have to have a petty mindset to file an FIR for this. UP Police, do you have anything better to do?” Activist Asif Khan pointed out the stark contrast in police actions, stating, “The same UP Police that showers rose petals on kawariyas is booking a Muslim woman for praying.”
Many social media users questioned why a brief prayer, lasting less than ten minutes, was treated as a criminal offense, arguing that it caused no disturbance to the public.
