Sopore, Kashmir, April 16: The heartwarming story of an elderly woman’s egg donation for mosque construction, exemplifies the profound impact of selflessness and generosity within a community.
In the midst of a fundraising campaign to build a mosque in Malpora village in Sopore, Jammu and Kashmir, locals rallied together to contribute towards the construction project. Among them was an elderly woman who, despite facing financial difficulties, chose to offer a single egg as her contribution.
This simple yet deeply meaningful gesture touched the hearts of everyone present there. The generosity displayed by the elderly woman resonated strongly with the mosque committee. Inspired by her act of kindness, they decided to take an unconventional approach by auctioning this egg to raise funds.
The outcome of the auction was extraordinary. This symbolic donation transformed into a substantial contribution when the egg fetched a remarkable amount of ₹2,26,650.
A PTI report widely published says: “All donations made in kind were put up for auction and the egg turned out to be the most sought after.
“A local resident said people bid on the egg for three days and after every round, the successful bidder paid the amount they bid and then returned the egg to the committee as a donation to raise more money.
“On the final day of the auction, a young businessman named Danish Ahmad bought the egg for a whopping Rs 70,000.
“Ahmad, who hails from the neighbouring Warpora area, said, “We are very eager to complete the construction of this mosque at the earliest. As the mosque is planned to be big, the funds needed are also rather large.”
“I am not a rich man but it was just my passion and emotion towards the sacred space…,” he added.
“According to Ahmad, after several rounds of auction, the cumulative funds raised by bidders for the egg was a staggering Rs 2,26,350.”
This unexpected turn of events quickly gained attention on social media, spreading far beyond Sopore and capturing the admiration of people across the nation.
This story serves as a powerful reminder of the impact of faith, compassion, and the willingness to give, no matter how small the offering may seem. The elderly woman’s selfless act has become a shining example of how individual contributions, regardless of their value can make a meaningful difference in society.
Nazneen, staying in Houston, USA, comments:
“How beautiful is this ‘Ummah! Subhan Allah Rabbi!”
She adds that this humble act reminds her of a Sahabi who could only donate a handful of dates for Tabuk and as a gesture of highlighting this generosity, the beloved prophet ﷺ, spread those dates over the other contributions to show their worth and value.
The incident has been mentioned in the chapter of the Holy Quran, At-Taubah (verse 79). “Those who criticize the contributors among the believers concerning [their] charities and [criticize] the ones who find nothing [to spend] except their effort, so they ridicule them – Allah will ridicule them, and they will have a painful punishment.”
The following is an excerpt from a discussion of the events surrounding this revelation:
After a description of many Sahaba who gave a lot in charity, the same day, Asim ibn A’diyy ibn al-Ajlan gave to charity one hundred wasq of dates while Abu Aqil al-Ansari gave one sa’ of dates. Abu Aqil said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, I spent the night drawing water with a rope until I earned two measures (sa’) of dates; I kept one for my family and brought the other’. The Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, commanded him to spread it among the received alms. The hypocrites defamed Abd al-Rahman and A’sim, saying, “Abd al-Rahman and A’sim gave alms only to show off. Allah and His Messenger can indeed do without the measure (sa’) of Abu Aqil; he only wished to appear righteous. And so Allah, the Exalted is He, revealed this verse”.
It highlights the profound truth that generosity knows no bounds and can inspire others to follow in the footsteps of those who lead with empathy and compassion.
The viral spread of this egg story serves as a beacon of hope and encouragement, reminding us all of the inherent goodness that resides within each of us.
