Embracing Universal Empathy: Strengthening Bonds of the Muslim Ummah

– Shabbir Shaikh, Goa

As members of the global Muslim community, it is incumbent upon us to confront a significant challenge: the phenomenon of selective engagement and empathy towards the suffering of our fellow Muslims. While it is natural to feel deeply about specific crises, we must transcend boundaries of geography and circumstance to uphold the values of justice, compassion, and unity that are integral to Islam.

A Call for Inclusive Solidarity

The pain and struggles of our brothers and sisters, whether in Gaza, Syria, Yemen, Myanmar, or elsewhere, demand our unwavering attention and support. Our faith teaches us to be concerned for all believers, irrespective of nationality, ethnicity, or sect. It is hypocritical to shed tears for one group of Muslims while remaining indifferent to the plight of others.

The Prophetic Model of Compassion

The teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ exemplify the importance of standing up for truth and justice, irrespective of circumstances or identities. Selective engagement contradicts the spirit of Islam, which calls us to be just, compassionate, and proactive in addressing the hardships faced by humanity.

Consequences of Selective Outrage

Our selective outrage perpetuates division within our community, weakening our collective strength and hindering effective responses to oppression and injustice. By neglecting certain groups of Muslims, we inadvertently condone their suffering and embolden their oppressors, deepening their sense of isolation.

Expanding Our Circle of Empathy

Let us rise above narrow prejudices and expand our circle of empathy and concern. Consistency in support for all oppressed peoples, regardless of background, is essential. Educating ourselves about global crises affecting Muslims and actively seeking solutions can make a profound difference.

An Islamic Ethos of Justice

Allah instructs believers in the Quran: “O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives.” (Quran 4:135) This verse underscores the imperative of upholding justice and fairness, irrespective of personal biases.

A Path Forward

May Allah guide us to embody the true spirit of Islam by extending mercy and compassion to all His creation. Let us unite in our commitment to justice and empathy, transcending boundaries to become beacons of solidarity and support for every member of the Muslim ummah.

In this way, we strive to fulfill our duty as Muslims to uplift and support one another, ensuring that no one within our community is left behind in their time of need.
