EU Lawmaker Clare Daly Calls for UN Reform Amid Israel’s Gaza Conflict

22 May 2024: European Parliament legislator Clare Daly has underscored the urgent need to reform international institutions in response to Israel’s ongoing conflict in Gaza. Daly, known for her staunch pro-Palestine stance, described Gaza as a “crisis of international law” and emphasized the imperative of reshaping global frameworks.

In an interview with Anadolu, Daly condemned the lack of action from Western nations and elites, contrasting it with the growing support for Palestinians worldwide. She highlighted the disconnect between governments and their citizens, with ordinary people increasingly voicing solidarity with Palestine.

Daly stressed the necessity of harnessing transnational efforts to reimagine the United Nations and ensure the effectiveness of international law. She emphasized that people globally share common aspirations, advocating for coordinated action to address the crisis in Gaza.

Responding to inquiries about Ireland’s strong pro-Palestine sentiments, Daly attributed it to the Irish people’s historical struggle for decolonization and their solidarity with oppressed communities worldwide.

In a separate interview, peace activist Karin De Rigo criticized Germany’s support for Israel and its suppression of pro-Palestine voices. De Rigo denounced the German government’s attempts to silence dissent and highlighted the hypocrisy in its stance on human rights.

De Rigo attributed Germany’s unwavering support for Israel to a misguided attempt to distance itself from its past, suggesting that true liberation involves supporting the Palestinian cause.

As tensions persist in Gaza, voices like Daly and De Rigo call for a reevaluation of international responses and a renewed commitment to justice and human rights.
