Ex-HC judge Shameem Akhter to head Commission on SC sub-categorisation

Hyderabad: The government of Telangana has appointed Dr Justice Shameem Akhter, former judge of Telangana High Court, as one-man Commission of Inquiry to conduct a study on sub-classification within Scheduled Castes reserved categories and to examine various aspects associated with the issue.

The government appointed the one-man under the Commissions of Inquiry Act and asked it to submit its report within 60 days.

The Scheduled Castes development department on Friday issued a Government Order in this regard.

The Government formed the commission on the recommendation of a committee constituted to study the judgment of the seven-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court on the sub-classification within Scheduled Castes reserved categories.

Headed by Minister for Irrigation and Civil Supplied N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, the six-member committee on October 9 recommended the appointment of a Commission of Inquiry for sub-classification within Scheduled Castes reserved categories based on the Supreme Court judgment of August 1.

While welcoming the Supreme Court order, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy had announced in the state Assembly that Telangana would be the first state to implement it. He said if necessary, the government would issue an ordinance to implement the Supreme Court order in job notifications already issued.

However, the government came under flak from Madiga Reservation Porata Samithi (MRPS) for filling government vacancies without sub-categorisation of SCs. MRPS leader Manda Krishna Madiga, who has been fighting for sub-categorisation for nearly three decades, warned of an agitation.

The Chief Minister has promised that new job notifications will be issued only after sub-categorisation.
