A two-day national seminar titled “Understanding Ghalib: Reflections in Contemporary Times” commenced at Calicut University, Kerala, in collaboration with the Ghalib Institute. Professor Syed Sajjad Hussain, delivering the keynote address, emphasised that Ghalib’s poetry cannot be fully appreciated from a single perspective. He noted that Ghalib’s creative genius explores depths often overlooked, and to truly grasp his greatness, one must consider his work from various angles. Hussain added that Ghalib is not a poet confined to a particular era – his poetry transcends time.
The seminar’s inauguration was held at the EMS Seminar Hall on Tuesday, with Calicut University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor P. Ravindran, officiating. In his opening remarks, Professor Ravindran highlighted that the magic of Ghalib’s poetry is not limited to the realm of Urdu literature but resonates with people from diverse fields, whether in the world of cinema or politics. “This influence is not mere imitation but a genuine impact,” he added.
Professor Nikulan KV, head of the Urdu Department at Calicut University, presided over the inaugural session. He mentioned that although the Urdu department at Calicut University is relatively new, it has undertaken important activities. He praised the Ghalib Institute for organising the seminar in this region, saying it marks a new tradition of Ghalib studies in Kerala. He expressed hope that the research papers presented during the seminar would shed new light on contemporary connections to Ghalib’s work.
In his welcoming remarks, Dr. Idris Ahmed, Director of the Ghalib Institute, shared that the institute organises two Ghalib seminars outside Delhi each year, choosing locations where Urdu seminars are rarely held. He expressed optimism that this event would spark greater interest in Ghalib’s poetry among the local audience. Dr. Ahmed also emphasised that the institute strives to involve participants from the seminar’s host region.
Special guest Professor Safia B. noted that while there are many great poets whose works may be read only a few times, each reading of Ghalib reveals a new dimension. Professor Pramod K. was honored at the event, and Professor Muhammad Aman A.K. expressed gratitude, acknowledging the Ghalib Institute as one of the most active Urdu institutions and appreciating its choice of Kerala for such a seminar. He thanked all participants.
Dr. Muhammad Rizwan and Ms. Aparna M.S. moderated the inaugural session. Following the session, an evening of ghazal performances was held, featuring renowned ghazal singers Siraj Amal and Sarika Girish, who presented selections from Ghalib’s works and other poets. The seminar’s remaining sessions are scheduled for today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the EMS Seminar Hall at Calicut University.
