Family of Deceased Muslim Constable Questions Official Account of ‘Accidental Fire’ in Aligarh

New Delhi, July 19: A tragic incident in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, has left the family of Muslim police constable Mohammad Yaqub demanding a thorough investigation after he was fatally shot during a raid early Wednesday morning.

Constable Yaqub was killed when a bullet reportedly “accidentally” discharged from the jammed pistol of Sub-Inspector (SI) Rajeev Kumar, who was attempting to apprehend cow slaughter suspects. According to a report by Clarion India, Kumar was trying to load his jammed pistol when it discharged, with the bullet passing through his abdomen and striking Yaqub in the head.

The raid, which took place in the Gavana area around 9-10 pm, was part of an operation to intercept a suspect from Bulandshahr. During the raid, Kumar’s pistol malfunctioned, leading to the fatal accident. Kumar is currently receiving medical treatment for his injuries.

A video surfaced on social media showing the injured SI explaining the sequence of events. He mentioned that while trying to fix the jammed pistol, it suddenly fired, grazing his stomach before hitting Constable Yaqub in the head.

Yaqub’s family has expressed skepticism over the official explanation, with his father questioning how the bullet could strike his son’s head after piercing the SI’s abdomen. “There is something fishy in the whole episode,” a family member said anonymously, reflecting the family’s doubts about the narrative provided by the authorities.

SSP Sanjeev Suman stated that Yaqub was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment, where he was declared dead by doctors. Despite this, the family’s doubts persist, prompting calls for a detailed investigation into the incident.

Prominent political figures, including All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, have also raised questions about the incident. Owaisi posted on social media, challenging the plausibility of the official account and calling for an inquiry into the matter.

The incident has not only highlighted the perils faced by law enforcement officers during high-risk operations but also underscored the need for transparency and accountability in such cases, especially when questions arise regarding the circumstances of an officer’s death.
