Farmer leader and Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) representative Rakesh Tikait has announced plans to hold a panchayat (public gathering) in Prayagraj on May 8 to address the ongoing irregularities in land acquisition.
Speaking to the media on Sunday, Tikait said the event will focus on exposing the flaws in the land acquisition process across the country. “Land acquisition has become a major issue. Under its pretext, people’s lands are being snatched. In many tehsils, lands are being transferred under a conspiracy so that disputes erupt among common people,” he claimed.
He cited examples where farmers owning 20 bighas of land were officially recorded as holding only 5 bighas. “Farmers are running from pillar to post for land measurements, but officials are refusing to carry them out. However, when a businessman applies, the measurement is done instantly,” he said, highlighting discrimination in the system.
Tikait emphasized the urgent need for a large-scale protest in Prayagraj, stating, “This issue requires a mass movement.”
Reacting to a separate incident in the Karachhana area of the district, where a Dalit man was reportedly murdered and his body was attempted to be burned, Tikait condemned the law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh. He also mentioned plans to visit the families of three murder victims in Fatehpur.
