New Delhi, Dec. 23: On Wednesday, 20th December, Israeli authorities released Farouk al-Khatib, a Palestinian man who had been arrested in August. Al-Khatib, 30, spent four months in Israeli administrative detention, where he lost around 25kg in weight and now weighs just 35kg.

According to his brother, Hossam, Farouk was diagnosed with stage five stomach cancer shortly before his release from prison and is now receiving end-of-life care at a hospital in Ramallah, in Occupied West Bank.

According to his family, Farouk also completed a four-year prison sentence between 2019 and June 2023, and was initially held at the notorious Ofer military prison following his re-arrest, before being shifted after 7th October.

Hossam also added that the family was certain that Israel has released him because his illness was in its final stages, and his situation had worsened beyond capacity due to lack of treatment and custodial violence.

Another of Farouk’s brothers has also been arrested after 7th October and the family has no idea about his whearabouts.

On social media, people shared Farouk’s images arguing that they bore striking resemblance to the horrifying archival images of Holocaust survivors. Farouk’s father has also said that his son was held in solitary detention.
