Chennai: Fatima Muzaffar Ahmed has taken a central role in national Muslim politics after becoming the first woman office bearer of the Indian Union Muslim League at the national level. She serves as one of two national assistant secretaries of the party and leads its women’s wing.
Her rise reflects a steady journey shaped by public service and electoral success. In the 2022 Chennai corporation elections, she stood as the sole IUML winner in the city. She ranked among only six Muslim women councillors elected across Tamil Nadu during those polls. Her victory came with a strong margin.
Fatima hails from a family rooted in public life. Her father, AK Abdul Samad, served as national general secretary of IUML and represented Velur in both Houses of Parliament. Her grandfather, a Maulana, took part in the freedom movement and led the first Tamil translation of the Quran after decades of effort. His work faced opposition during its time, yet the translation remains widely read.
Despite such lineage, Fatima entered politics through her own initiative. She began as a student union leader and later moved into organised political work. She credits equal upbringing at home and early involvement in social action for shaping her path.
Within the Chennai corporation, she serves on the standing committee for education. She also holds roles in the Wakf Board, the Haj Committee, and the executive body of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, where only six women hold membership.
Fatima voices concern over rising communal fear and online hostility targeting Muslims. She praises Tamil Nadu’s governance model for minority safety and inclusive growth. She links unity across communities with strong economic outcomes, including high per capita income and rapid development.
Her work among marginalised groups has earned national recognition, academic honours, and global exposure through international forums. She says her political aim focuses on social development, equality, and shared progress across communities.
