First FIRs Filed Under New Criminal Law in Jammu & Kashmir

2 July 2024: The Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered their first FIRs under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), the new criminal laws that came into effect on Monday. FIRs were filed in multiple districts, marking a significant shift in the region’s justice delivery system.

In Anantnag district, FIR No. 143/2024 was registered at Bijbehara Police Station under Section 125(a) and 281 of the BNS 2023. This was the first FIR in the Kashmir Zone under the new laws.

Similarly, in Srinagar, FIR No. 22/2024 was filed at Chanapora Police Station under Section 303 of the BNS and 135(1) of the Electricity Act. Baramulla saw FIR No. 93/2024 registered at Kreeri Police Station under Sections 303(2) and 329(3) of the BNS.

In Sopore, FIR No. 25/2024 was lodged at Panzla Police Station under Section 223, 303(ii), and 326A of the BNS. Kulgam Police also registered its first case, FIR No. 47/2024, under Sections 74 and 115(2) of the BNS at Yaripora Police Station.

“This historic event marks the beginning of a new era in the justice delivery system within the Kashmir Zone,” said a police spokesperson.
