Former Cabinet Minister Dr. Mairajuddin Ahmed Passes Away at AIIMS

New Delhi: Former Cabinet Minister and senior Congress leader Dr. Mairajuddin Ahmed passed away on Saturday, at AIIMS in New Delhi. He had been unwell for an extended period and was admitted to the hospital on January 10.

Dr. Ahmed’s demise at the age of 67 has left the political and social spheres in mourning. According to his son Faiz Mahmood, he succumbed to a heart attack while undergoing treatment for complications related to brain vessels.

Dr. Ahmed began his political journey with the Congress Party and served as a prominent face of Uttar Pradesh politics. Over the years, he also represented other political parties, including the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD).

He contested the 1983 Saradhana Assembly elections under the Congress banner but did not succeed. Later, he joined SP and contested the Baghpat parliamentary seat in 1998 and 1999. From 2010 to 2017, he rejoined Congress before moving to RLD, where he served as a minister and national general secretary. In 2024, he returned to Congress ahead of the Uttar Pradesh by-elections, marking his final political shift.

Dr. Ahmed, a resident of Meerut’s Kotwali area and originally from Rattaul village in Baghpat district, was widely respected for his contributions to society. He rejoined Congress at the “Save Constitution Pledge Conference” in Ghaziabad on October 18, 2024, in the presence of his supporters, which was his last public appearance.

His death has sent shockwaves across the political and social landscape, with leaders and communities expressing their grief over the loss of a dedicated leader and social worker.
