Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India and veteran Congress leader, passed away on Thursday at the age of 92. He was admitted to AIIMS Delhi in critical condition after his health deteriorated earlier in the evening.
Dr. Singh, a renowned politician, economist, academic, and bureaucrat, served as the Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014. He holds the distinction of being the fourth longest-serving Prime Minister in the country’s history, following Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, and Narendra Modi. A stalwart of the Indian National Congress, he was also the first Sikh to hold the office of Prime Minister.
In a statement AIIMS Delhi expressed profound grief over his passing. “With deep sorrow, we announce the demise of Former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, aged 92. He was under treatment for age-related medical conditions and experienced a sudden loss of consciousness at his residence on December 26, 2024. Resuscitative efforts were initiated immediately at home, and he was brought to the Emergency Department at AIIMS, New Delhi, at 8:06 PM. Despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9:51 PM.”
Condolence messages have poured in from across the political spectrum, both in India and abroad. Senior leaders from the Congress Party and other political organisations have expressed their deep sorrow, remembering Dr. Singh as one of India’s finest statesmen and a visionary leader who left an indelible mark on the nation.
