Francesca Albanese, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, has expressed deep concern over the reported condition of detained Gaza hospital director Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, describing his case as an example of what she called a wider pattern of abuse targeting Palestinian medical personnel.
Speaking in an interview with Chris Hedges about her new book, While the World Sleeps, Albanese referred to reports from Dr. Abu Safiya’s lawyer, who alleged that the physician has been held without charge for 18 months and subjected to repeated violence in detention. According to the account, the doctor has lost substantial weight, bears visible bruises, struggles to breathe and fears he will not survive.
Albanese said Dr. Abu Safiya remained at his hospital during the conflict after losing one of his children, refusing to abandon patients despite the dangers. She argued that his detention reflects what she described as a broader campaign against Gaza’s healthcare system.
The UN expert stated that attacks on hospitals, the detention of medical workers and the deaths of healthcare professionals have weakened medical services across Gaza. She said the loss of trained doctors has left hospitals unable to provide many essential treatments.
Albanese also referred to reports issued by UN experts and human rights organisations alleging torture and abuse of Palestinian detainees. She argued that international humanitarian law protects medical personnel and healthcare facilities during armed conflict, adding that the reported treatment of doctors raises serious legal and humanitarian concerns.
She also criticised sections of the international media, claiming coverage often repeated official Israeli narratives instead of closely examining allegations of abuse.
Throughout the interview, Albanese urged greater international action and accountability. She said protecting medical workers and ensuring respect for international law remain essential for safeguarding civilian lives during conflict.
