From Jamia to LSE: Chevening Scholar Aafreen Naaz Shares What It Really Takes Beyond Good Grades

New Delhi: For many Indian students, studying abroad is more than just an academic aspiration — it is a chance for global exposure, advanced opportunities, and promising career prospects, as per a report by the Indian Express. Yet, financial constraints often stand as a barrier. Scholarships like the UK Government’s Chevening Scholarship have played a crucial role in breaking these barriers by providing fully funded opportunities to deserving candidates.

This year, out of more than one lakh applicants worldwide, around 50 Indian students have been selected for the prestigious scholarship. Among them is Aafreen Naaz, a BA LLB (Hons) 2024 graduate from the Faculty of Law, Jamia Millia Islamia, who will pursue a Master of Laws (LLM) in Human Rights Law at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).

Speaking about her journey, Aafreen emphasized that academic excellence alone is not enough for securing Chevening. “Beyond eligibility, applicants should focus on demonstrating impact, measurable outcomes, and a clear vision of how their education will help them contribute back to their home country,” she said.

She further highlighted that candidates must also show how they will contribute to the Chevening community, and not just benefit from it. The scholarship is designed to support individuals who display leadership qualities and a vision to bring about positive social change.

The Chevening Scholarship continues to empower young leaders from across the globe, reinforcing the idea that true success lies not only in personal growth but also in giving back to society.
