Gauhati High Court Grants Interim Bail to USTM Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque

Guwahati : The Gauhati High Court has granted interim bail to Mahbubul Hoque, the Chancellor of the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM), weeks after his arrest in connection with the Dhekiajuli case. His detention had sparked widespread debate, with many viewing it as politically motivated, reported the Hindustan Times.
Justice Mitali Thakuria, who presided over the case, granted the interim bail while imposing strict conditions. Hoque is required to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation, appear before the Investigating Officer when summoned, and refrain from influencing any individuals connected to the case. The court set a bail amount of ₹50,000, with a surety of the same amount. His bail remains valid until the next hearing scheduled for April 9, 2025, when the court will review the Case Diary.
Hoque was arrested in February from his Guwahati residence following allegations of misconduct, including accusations of offering undue advantages to students in exchange for favors. The Assam government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, had previously launched a campaign against him, citing concerns over alleged irregularities in CBSE examinations and controversial claims of “flood jihad.”
The arrest triggered strong criticism from various quarters, with many asserting that the action was part of a broader crackdown on minorities in the state. Critics argue that Hoque, a respected educationist and social worker, has been targeted as part of a politically charged narrative.
Hoque’s release from Tezpur Central Jail at around 6:30 PM on March 24 has brought relief to his supporters. However, the legal battle continues as the court prepares for the upcoming hearing next month.
