Gaza: Eleven children who were evacuated as premature babies during intense fighting in Gaza have reunited with their families after nearly two years, marking an emotional moment for parents and communities.
The children were among 29 infants moved from the neonatal intensive care unit at Al Shifa hospital in November 2023. The evacuation took place as Israeli forces approached the facility. Due to security restrictions and a closed border with Egypt, only medical staff accompanied the infants. Parents remained behind.
On Monday, the children, now toddlers, returned to Gaza through a United Nations coordinated mission. Families welcomed them with tears and relief. For many parents, this was the first time they could hold their children.
One mother, Sundus Al Kurd, embraced her daughter Bissan after years of separation. She said she had not been able to touch or hold her child since birth. She described the reunion as a new beginning and expressed hope to rebuild their bond gradually.
Doctors said seven of the evacuated infants died during treatment in Egypt. Some children remain outside Gaza with extended family. Those who returned now face the challenge of reconnecting with parents they do not yet recognize.
The war caused heavy damage to hospitals and neonatal units in Gaza. Health officials reported severe shortages in essential medicines and medical supplies. Around half of basic medicines and most medical supplies remain unavailable.
The reunions bring relief to families, yet they also highlight the long-term impact of war on children and healthcare systems in Gaza.
