Riyadh – Saudi Arabia is set to host an Arab Summit on February 20 to address former US President Donald Trump’s controversial proposal for a US-led control over the Gaza Strip, sources familiar with the preparations confirmed to Reuters. The summit, scheduled in Riyadh, will bring together leaders from Egypt, Jordan, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas is also expected to participate.
This high-level meeting comes ahead of an Arab League summit in Cairo on February 27, where the same issue will be discussed. Trump reportedly envisions “cleaning up” the war-ravaged Gaza Strip and transforming it into the “Riviera of the Midwest.” He has also hinted at withholding aid from Jordan and Egypt if they refuse to cooperate with his plan.
During a White House press conference following Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Washington, Trump suggested placing Gaza under US administration while relocating its residents to Jordan and Egypt, barring their right to return. Netanyahu further stirred controversy by suggesting that Saudi Arabia could host displaced Palestinians, a remark that drew immediate condemnation from Arab nations.
Both Egypt and Jordan have firmly rejected Trump’s plan, calling it a violation of international law and warning that forced displacement could destabilize the entire region. Since the outbreak of the war in Gaza on October 7, 2023, following Hamas’ attack on Israel and Israel’s military response, Egypt has played a key role in mediating ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas.
The conflict has resulted in thousands of casualties and widespread destruction, increasing global pressure for a diplomatic resolution.
