German FM Hints at Possible Arrest of Netanyahu

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock on Tuesday indicated that the international arrest warrant issued against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could be implemented if he enters German territory, reports Middle East Monitor.

“The federal government adheres to the law because no one is above it,” Baerbock said on the sidelines of a meeting of G7 foreign ministers in the Italian city of Fiuggi.

“The independence of the judiciary is paramount, and in this case the judiciary has reached the conclusion that there is sufficient evidence to take this step now,” the Green Party minister said.

On Thursday, the international Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, on charges of committing crimes against humanity and war crimes in Gaza.

The ongoing Israeli aggression on the besieged enclave, which has now entered its second year, has killed or wounded more than 148,000 Palestinians, most of them children and women. Over 10,000 are missing, presumed dead under the rubble of the decimated Strip.
