Ghalib Institute Mourns the Demise of Renowned Urdu Poet Bashir Badr

New Delhi: The Ghalib Institute, New Delhi, has expressed deep sorrow over the demise of eminent Urdu poet, celebrated ghazal writer, and Padma Shri awardee Dr. Bashir Badr, who passed away in Bhopal on May 28, 2026.

In a condolence message, the institute described his death as a profound loss to Urdu literature, particularly to the tradition of modern Urdu ghazal. Dr. Bashir Badr was widely regarded as one of the most influential voices in contemporary Urdu poetry, whose work earned immense popularity across generations of readers and poetry enthusiasts.

Prof. Siddiqur Rahman Kidwai, Secretary of the Ghalib Institute, said that Dr. Bashir Badr’s demise represents an irreparable loss to the Urdu language and literature. He noted that through his poetry, the renowned poet beautifully expressed themes of love, humanism, tolerance, and contemporary sensibilities, leaving behind a rich literary legacy that will continue to inspire future generations.

Prof. Kidwai further observed that Bashir Badr’s ghazals played a significant role in bringing Urdu poetry closer to the masses and enhancing its popular appeal.

The Ghalib Institute also extended its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of the poet and to admirers of literature around the world.

Paying tribute to the late poet, Dr. Idris Ahmad, Director of the Ghalib Institute, said that Dr. Bashir Badr was not merely a poet but also a custodian of a rich literary and cultural tradition. He remarked that Badr’s poetry reflected the joys and sorrows of life, the delicacy of human relationships, and a deep social consciousness.

Dr. Ahmad said that Urdu literature has lost a creative force whose voice and literary contributions will continue to resonate for decades to come.

The institute recalled that it had honoured Dr. Bashir Badr with the Ghalib Award in 2022 in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the Urdu literature.

Members of the institute’s administration, staff, and associates also paid tribute to the poet’s literary services and prayed for peace for the departed soul and strength and patience for his family during this difficult time.
