Livelihoods Halted as Boycott Targets Muslim Families in MP Village

Balaghat: Ten Muslim families in Ghoti village of Madhya Pradesh face a complete social and economic boycott after raising objections to hate speeches delivered during a local religious event. The boycott began over a week ago and continues without relief.

Residents said Hindu groups issued a public warning in the village. Any Hindu resident maintaining contact with the Muslim families faces a fine of Rs 5,000 and social exclusion. The order covers trade, employment, social visits, and participation in life events.

The affected families rely on local work for survival. Several run small shops such as a chicken outlet, a grocery store, and a puncture repair stall. Daily wage workers and drivers from the community now remain without income. Phones stay silent. Shops remain closed.

The dispute traces back to a Hindu Sammelan held on January 27. Muslim residents stated outside speakers delivered abusive remarks against Islam. Community members approached event organisers and village leaders to object. Soon after, village meetings took place. Video recordings show oath taking and aggressive slogans. The boycott followed.

Khairunisha, a resident, said families lived together for generations. She said children now stay home without work and neighbours avoid eye contact.

Police visited the area once after complaints. Residents reported no further steps. A former MLA from the area termed the boycott unacceptable and urged intervention from higher authorities.

Some Hindu villagers denied any boycott and described the issue as a rumour. Muslim families rejected this claim and pointed to closed markets and lost jobs as proof.

Life in Ghoti’s Muslim mohalla remains stalled. Weddings, funerals, and daily commerce face exclusion. Families continue to wait for administrative action.
