Global Ambedkarite Groups Condemn Amit Shah’s Remarks on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar

New Delhi: Global Ambedkarite organisations have strongly condemned Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent remarks about Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, architect of the Constitution of India and a stalwart of social justice. The remarks, deemed dismissive, have sparked widespread outrage, especially among marginalised communities.

In a controversial statement, Amit Shah reportedly said, “It has now become a fashion to say – Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar… If you recite this many times, like God’s name, you will attain heaven for seven lifetimes.” The comment has been criticised for trivialising Dr. Ambedkar’s monumental contributions to India’s democracy and his fight for equality.

As per a report in The Hindu, Global Ambedkarite groups issued a joint statement expressing their disapproval, noting that Shah’s comments have hurt millions who hold Dr. Ambedkar in high esteem as an icon of social reform and empowerment.

“Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s vision of justice, equality, and fraternity underpins India’s democratic ethos. As the principal architect of the Constitution, he ensured the nation stood as a secular and inclusive democracy, guaranteeing equal rights to all citizens. Any attempt to undermine his legacy is an affront to the core values of our Constitution,” the statement read.

The organizations have called for immediate remedial measures, including a public apology from Amit Shah for his remarks, a reaffirmation by the government of its commitment to uphold Dr. Ambedkar’s values, and programmes to raise awareness about Dr. Ambedkar’s contributions among public officials and the general populace.

The signatories emphasised that Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy is a national treasure that transcends caste and religion. They stressed that leaders in power must honour and respect his contributions to the nation’s progress.

Prominent Ambedkarite organisations and individuals, including NRIs, have backed the statement. Groups such as Equality Labs, Ambedkar International Mission (AIM), and Periyar International have demanded swift government action to address the matter.

“The remarks risk creating discord and weakening the social fabric of the nation. We urge the government to take steps to prevent such incidents in the future,” the statement concluded.

The controversy comes at a time when Dr. Ambedkar’s ideals of equality and justice are increasingly seen as crucial to addressing societal challenges in India. Advocates hope that this incident will lead to a renewed commitment to his vision.
