For the past 30 years, Hafiz Muhammad Mateen Khan Misbahi has been leading Taraweeh prayers with devotion, including 21 years in Mauritius. Currently, he is leading the 8th Taraweeh at Masjid Noor in Mauritius, continuing a tradition that began in 2004.
Born in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, Hafiz Mateen completed his Hifz at Madrasa Ashraf-ul-Uloom and later pursued Islamic studies at Jamia Ashrafia Mubarakpur and Jamia Qadriya Ashrafiya. His journey in leading Taraweeh prayers started at the age of 15, and since then, he has led prayers in India, Goa, and Mauritius.
His connection with Mauritius began unexpectedly when his late elder brother, Muhammad Saleem Khan, hosted a Mauritian resident, Muhammad Muslim, at Masjid Nabawi. Impressed by his hospitality, Muslim invited Hafiz Mateen to lead Taraweeh in Mauritius, an opportunity that shaped his lifelong association with the country.
Despite initial cultural differences, including an incident where he objected to music in a car, Hafiz Mateen’s commitment to religious values earned him deep respect. His hosts now arrange all travel and accommodation for him each Ramadan.
Beyond his role as a Hafiz, Hafiz Mateen is a teacher and mentor, shaping future generations while upholding the sacred tradition of Taraweeh.
