31 July 2024: Hamas senior leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran, Iran, according to a statement released by the Palestinian group Hamas on July 31. Hamas mourned the death of Haniyeh, attributing it to “a treacherous Zionist raid on his residence in Tehran.”
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards confirmed the assassination of Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards, as reported by Iranian state media.
Earlier this year, on April 10, Haniyeh’s three sons—Hazem, Amir, and Mohammad—were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza. The attack, which targeted their car in Gaza’s Al-Shati camp, also resulted in the deaths of two of Haniyeh’s grandchildren, with a third grandchild wounded.
Appointed as Hamas’ top leader in 2017, Haniyeh navigated travel restrictions imposed by Israel in blockaded Gaza by residing between Turkey and Qatar’s capital, Doha. This mobility allowed him to act as a negotiator in ceasefire negotiations and maintain communication with Hamas’ main ally, Iran.
