Hamas Leader Ismail Haniyeh Assassination in Tehran: Iran Blames Israel

4 August 2024: The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) of Iran has confirmed that Hamas Politburo Chief Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated by a “short-range projectile loaded with an almost 7-kg warhead.” The attack occurred early Wednesday at Haniyeh’s residence in Tehran, where he was staying to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

The IRGC stated that the “terrorist” attack was orchestrated by Israel with support from the US government. They described the incident as a significant explosion caused by the projectile fired from outside the residence. The IRGC emphasized that “the revenge for Haniyeh’s blood will be definite,” promising a “decisive response to this crime” at a time and place of their choosing.

The assassination of Haniyeh, who was accompanied by his bodyguard, has heightened tensions in the region, with Iran vowing a harsh retaliation against Israel. The incident marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel, further straining an already volatile geopolitical landscape.
