Chandigarh: The Haryana Police is facing serious questions after two officers died by suicide within days of each other, both linked to disturbing allegations of harassment and corruption. The incidents have triggered a probe into the internal functioning and accountability of the state police force.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Pradeep Kumar was found dead at his home in Panipat on October 13, 2023. Before his death, he recorded a video accusing senior officer IPS Y Puran Kumar, then Principal of the Police Training Centre in Karnal, of corruption and mental harassment. In the video, he alleged that the IPS officer demanded bribes for departmental tasks, denied him leave, and threatened him with suspension.
Two days later, on October 15, IPS officer Y Puran Kumar was found dead by suicide. His death followed soon after the release of Pradeep Kumar’s video, which has since gone viral on social media. The twin tragedies have sparked widespread concern about the mental health and working conditions of Haryana Police personnel.
Authorities have begun verifying the authenticity of the video and investigating the claims made by the ASI. However, no formal disciplinary or administrative action has been announced yet.
The incident has reignited debate on the need for stronger mental health support, transparency, and grievance mechanisms within the police force to prevent such tragedies in the future.
