New Delhi: The Association for Protection of Civil Rights has urged Delhi Police to act against rising hate speech and threats targeting Muslims in Uttam Nagar, West Delhi, as Eid al Fitr approaches.
In a formal representation submitted on March 15 to the Commissioner of Police, the group warned of possible communal unrest if authorities fail to respond quickly. The complaint highlights growing tension in the JJ Colony area.
The issue began with a personal dispute between two families on March 4 during Holi celebrations. Police registered a case and arrested some individuals. APCR stated that certain groups have since tried to give the incident a communal angle to spread hostility against Muslims.
The organisation reported that inflammatory speeches have circulated on social media and at local gatherings. These include threats aimed at stopping Muslims from celebrating Eid in the area. Some messages call for forced Holi celebrations on Eid day and urge violence before prayers.
Posters announcing Holi celebrations on March 20, which coincides with the expected date of Eid al Fitr, have increased concern among residents. The Eidgah in JJ Colony serves thousands of worshippers each year. Many families now fear for their safety during prayers.
APCR, through its National Secretary Nadim Khan, has asked police to identify those behind the hate messages and take strict legal action. The group also demanded increased patrolling and security at the Eidgah and nearby mosques.
Copies of the complaint were sent to local police officials. APCR has sought a response within 24 hours on steps to maintain peace.
