High Court Intervention Sought as Police Halt Eid al-Adha Sacrifices in UP

18 Jun. 24: A public interest litigation has been filed in the Allahabad High Court seeking intervention against the Uttar Pradesh police’s directive preventing animal sacrifices in homes and private enclosures during Eid al-Adha.

Allegations have emerged from Mau, where police reportedly issued verbal orders prohibiting residents from performing animal sacrifices on the occasion of Eid al-Adha. The High Court was expected to hear the case on Wednesday, but the hearing was postponed due to a backlog of cases.

The Uttar Pradesh government was scheduled to file its response during Wednesday’s hearing. However, government lawyers have yet to receive any instructions on how to proceed with this case. The hearing is now expected to take place on Thursday.

This development has sparked significant concern among the local Muslim community, who see the police directive as an infringement on their religious practices. The High Court’s decision will be closely watched, as it could set a precedent for religious freedom and police authority in the state.
