Udupi, Sep 5: On the occasion of Teacher’s Day, the state level best principal award for the year 2023-2024 has been announced, and this time the award has been given to Ramakrishna B.G., principal of Government Undergraduate College, Kundapur.
Two years ago, in the wake of the hijab controversy, Ramakrishna had stopped the students at the gate of the college and insisted upon removing the Hijab.
His selection by the state Congress government for the state-level ‘Uttama Principal Award’ for the academic year 2024-25 was the subject of strong criticism. As the news of Ramakrishna’s selection for the award hit the media, there was a flood of criticism on social media. It was learned that the government had backed away from the decision. The award to the controversial principal has been withheld.
Earlier, the Welfare Party of India raised strong objections against the selection of Ramakrishna for the award. State president of the party advocate Taher Husain termed the government decision as betrayal of the people and sought explanation from the education minister Madhu Bangarappa the criterion on which this selection was made. He strongly demanded to drop the name of BG Ramakrishna.
