Congress Seeks Clarification From PM ; Asks Sarma to Tender Unconditional Apology

New Delhi: The Congress party has demanded an unconditional apology from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma after his remarks against party president Mallikarjun Kharge triggered strong reactions. The party also sought a response from the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on whether they support the statements.

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi condemned the remarks and called them shameful and unacceptable. He said Kharge is a senior Dalit leader whose stature and contribution hold national importance. Gandhi stated that insulting Kharge amounts to an insult to crores of people from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

He accused the BJP and RSS of following a pattern of targeting Dalit leaders. He referred to past instances involving criticism of Dalit figures and said such remarks reflect a deeper mindset. Gandhi also questioned the Prime Minister’s silence and asked if it signals approval.

Congress general secretary K C Venugopal criticised Sarma’s language and described it as inappropriate for a public office holder. He said the Chief Minister must apologise for insulting a senior leader who rose from humble beginnings.

Jairam Ramesh also issued a sharp response. He said the remarks crossed limits of dignity and reflect a mindset opposed to social justice. He added that attacks on both Kharge and Rahul Gandhi deserve strong condemnation.

The controversy has intensified political tensions, with Congress pressing for accountability and clarity from the ruling leadership.
