Hindu Man Assaulted for Traveling with Muslim Colleague in Shivamogga

Bengaluru, June 4, 2024: In a disturbing incident, a 26-year-old Hindu man was assaulted for traveling with a Muslim woman colleague in Shivamogga city, Karnataka. The police reported that the attack occurred on Saturday when the victim, identified as Nandan, was on a professional errand with his colleague Ameena.

Nandan, an employee of a private finance company and a resident of Seigetahalli, was waylaid by two men who objected to him riding a motorcycle with Ameena. According to the police, the attackers, along with a group of 10-15 other men, took Nandan to a nearby sawmill and assaulted him with sticks.

The assault left Nandan severely injured, prompting his admission to McGann Hospital for treatment. The police have registered a case under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including unlawful assembly, rioting, promoting enmity between groups, causing grievous hurt, wrongful restraint, intentional insult, and criminal intimidation.

Doddapete police inspector Ravi Patil confirmed that efforts are underway to identify the culprits through CCTV footage. Local BJP MLA Channabasappa visited Nandan at the hospital, calling for stringent action against those responsible for the attack.

This incident has raised concerns about communal tensions in the area and the safety of individuals in professional and social interactions across religious lines.
