Ratnagiri: A disturbing video circulating on social media shows a mob, reportedly celebrating the Shimga festival, attempting to forcefully enter Jama Masjid in Rajapur, Maharashtra. Using a large wooden device, they tried to break the mosque’s gate while police officers stood by without intervening.
The incident, which occurred on March 12, was thwarted by the swift action of mosque authorities, who secured the gates, preventing a major communal clash. While large-scale violence was averted, one person reportedly sustained injuries. The mob was seen making multiple attempts to breach the gate, celebrating and dancing, while law enforcement remained passive.
Despite the severity of the incident, no official statement has been issued by the authorities, as reported by The Siasat Daily. The event has sparked outrage on social media, with many condemning the use of religious festivals to incite communal discord. Users on platforms like X and Reddit criticized the growing hostility, especially during the holy month of Ramadan, when Muslims were engaged in prayer inside the mosque.
Many commentators lamented the rising communal tensions in Ratnagiri, a region traditionally known for its interfaith harmony. Some even compared the situation to states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, alleging political influences behind the increasing hostility.
The attempted breach of the mosque has drawn widespread condemnation, raising concerns over the deteriorating social fabric and the failure of authorities to curb such extremist actions.
