History Conference Highlights Muslim Contributions to India, Calls for Accurate Historical Narrative

New Delhi: A two day conference at the India Islamic Cultural Centre brought together scholars, political leaders, and community representatives to discuss the historical contributions of Muslims to India’s development. The event was organised by the Indian History Forum under the theme “Revisiting the Muslim Contribution to India’s History, Society and Civilization.”

Speakers stressed the need to present an accurate understanding of history at a time when concerns are being raised about distortion of historical narratives. Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor said it is essential to distinguish between verified history and narratives that lack factual basis. He called for efforts to ensure that society engages with history based on truth.

Syed Sadatullah Husaini, President of Jamaat e Islami Hind, highlighted the role of history in shaping the future of a nation. He said history is not limited to information but serves as a foundation for collective progress. He warned against ignoring the contributions of Islam and Muslims and said such omissions weaken the understanding of national identity. He urged scholars and citizens to work together to present a balanced and accurate narrative.

Rajya Sabha member Manoj Kumar Jha said attempts to alter history pose risks to democratic values. He described history as a shared heritage that requires protection. Gurdip Singh Sappal also raised concerns about efforts to reshape historical accounts, calling the trend alarming.

Former Member of Parliament Mohammad Adeeb said altering history affects the identity of a civilisation. He stated that when history is changed, it impacts how societies understand themselves. Author Ashok Kumar Pandey and other experts also shared their perspectives on the need for evidence based historical study.

The conference included presentations by historians on the contributions of Muslims in areas such as economy, trade, sociology, and politics. A dedicated session focused on the role of Muslim women in shaping society and history.

Participants included scholars, researchers, religious leaders, and social workers from across the country. They expressed a shared commitment to promoting accurate historical understanding and contributing to informed public discourse.

Organisers said such initiatives aim to encourage research and dialogue on history, ensuring that diverse contributions to the nation are recognised and understood.
