In a historic first, the full Kiswah of Holy Kaaba will be displayed outside Makkah as the central exhibit of the Islamic Arts Biennale 2025 in Jeddah. The prestigious event, organised by the Diriyah Biennale Foundation, will open on January 25 at Western Hajj Terminal of King Abdulaziz International Airport and continue until May 25.
The Kiswah, an exquisitely embroidered black silk cloth adorned with Quranic verses in gold and silver thread, is changed annually in a solemn ceremony in Makkah. The Kiswah, to be showcased at the Biennale, is the very one that adorned the Kaaba last year.
“This exhibition will allow visitors to admire the craftsmanship behind the Kiswah and understand its historical significance,” stated the Diriyah Biennale Foundation in a statement.
Weighing over 1,000 kg, the Kiswah is handcrafted using 670kg of dyed silk, 120kg of gold thread, and 100kg of silver thread. This special display also coincides with the 100th Hijri anniversary of the Kiswah Factory of the Holy Kaaba (King Abdulaziz Complex), which has been responsible for its production since 1927 (AH 1346).
Alongside the Kiswah, the Biennale will showcase rare Islamic artefacts and contemporary artworks, offering a unique insight into Islamic artistic heritage and spirituality.
