Hyderabad Police Tighten Vigil and Sanitation Measures Ahead of Eid al-Adha

As Eid al-Adha (Bakrid) approaches on June 6, Hyderabad authorities have intensified preparations to ensure a peaceful, hygienic, and law-abiding celebration. From strengthening animal transport checks to deploying sanitation teams, the city administration is on high alert, reported the Siasat.
In a high-level coordination meeting held at Basheerbagh on Thursday, Hyderabad Police Commissioner CV Anand and GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan, along with senior officials from various departments, outlined a comprehensive plan to manage law and order and civic amenities during the festival.
Strict Vigil on Animal Transport
Police forces, particularly from the Rachakonda and Cyberabad commissionerates, have begun setting up checkposts on all major roads entering Hyderabad. The aim is to prevent illegal transportation of cattle in violation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Vehicles carrying animals without valid veterinary certificates and market bills will be seized. Instead of sending seized cattle to private gaushalas — a move that has previously sparked communal tensions — authorities will now transport them to designated GHMC holding points.
Round-the-clock deployment of veterinary doctors has been planned at all checkposts to ensure compliance and prevent cruelty. The police have also advised sellers to avoid displaying cattle on main roads and instead conduct business in interior areas to avoid confrontations with vigilante groups.
In Cyberabad, police are holding peace committee meetings with members of the Muslim and Qureshi communities to foster cooperation and maintain communal harmony during the festival period.
Sanitation and Civic Measures
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is also gearing up to maintain cleanliness across the city during the festival. GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan announced that garbage disposal bags would be distributed to every household to aid in the hygienic disposal of animal waste.
Special sanitation teams equipped with tippers, JCBs, and garbage trucks will be deployed near mosques, public slaughter areas, and residential neighborhoods on the day of Eid. A massive cleanliness drive will be undertaken to ensure the swift collection of animal waste and carcasses.
Management of Utilities and Stray Animals
To avoid inconvenience to the public, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), electricity department, and engineering wings have been instructed to ensure uninterrupted services during the festive days.
Special squads will also be on patrol to manage stray dogs, which have been known to cause disturbances, particularly in areas where animal waste is present.
Appeals for Peace and Cooperation
The police have issued a public appeal urging citizens to follow guidelines for animal transport and sale, and to maintain communal harmony. “Our focus is to ensure peaceful and hygienic celebrations. We request the cooperation of all communities in this effort,” said Commissioner Anand.
