No Kidding – BP issue is serious in children

Bengaluru: Health experts are raising alarms over the rising number of children and teenagers being diagnosed with high blood pressure in urban areas. Once considered a problem of adults, hypertension is now being seen in younger age groups due to lifestyle habits and, in some cases, underlying medical conditions.

Doctors in Bengaluru have reported an increase in cases of hypertension among children in the past few years. Poor dietary choices, such as foods with excessive salt and fat, are a major cause. Added to this is the growing lack of physical activity, as more children spend long hours on digital devices instead of playing outdoors.

In younger children, high blood pressure is often linked to health issues like kidney disease or hormonal imbalances. In older children and teenagers, obesity is emerging as a major risk factor for primary hypertension. Health professionals are warning that ignoring these signs can lead to long-term health complications.

Parents are being urged to adopt preventive steps at home. Nutrition experts recommend reducing salt intake and encouraging balanced meals rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Doctors also stress the need for at least 30 to 60 minutes of enjoyable physical activity every day. Activities like walking or cycling to school and encouraging outdoor play are simple but effective measures.

Screen time management is another key factor. Excessive time on mobile phones and other devices is directly linked to weight gain and inactivity. Parents are advised to monitor screen use and promote healthier routines.

Medical professionals also emphasize the importance of regular health screenings. Annual check-ups, along with government school and anganwadi programs, provide opportunities to monitor blood pressure and detect early signs of hypertension. If concerns arise, consulting a paediatrician is critical to identify and treat any underlying conditions.
