New Delhi: Chief Imam of the All India Imam Organisation, Imam Umer Ahmed Ilyasi, issued a strong condemnation of the terror attack at Australia’s Bondi Beach, describing the violence as inhuman and against Islamic values. He said Islam teaches protection of life and respect for humanity.
Speaking after details of the attack emerged, Imam Ilyasi said innocent lives were lost in a brutal act of terror. He stated Islam stands for saving lives and rejecting violence. He also pointed to the role of a Muslim individual who tried to protect others during the attack, calling it an example of moral courage rooted in faith.
The Chief Imam stressed an urgent need to confront radicalisation linked to misuse of religion. He said extremist groups misuse Islamic identity to justify terror acts. He called for collective action to end radical thinking and remove terror networks from society.
Imam Ilyasi announced nationwide prayers across India to honour victims. He said prayers would take place on Friday in mosques across the country. He added humanity remains the highest guiding principle for Muslims.
Australian authorities confirmed 16 deaths in the shooting at Bondi Beach, with over 40 people still receiving treatment in hospitals. The attack took place during a Jewish gathering marking the first day of Hanukkah. Officials classified the incident as a terrorist act. Victims included a 12 year old girl and a rabbi.
Police sealed the area around Bondi Beach as investigations continued. Officers also secured explosive materials found in a nearby vehicle.
