Imams to Protest over 17-Month Salary Delay

Sajid Rashidi, President of All India Imam Association, announced on Monday his plans to meet AAP Convenor Arvind Kejriwal to demand the release of salaries that have been pending for the past 17 months.

“Imams have not received their salaries for the last 17 months. We are urging the Delhi government to release the funds to the Waqf Board before the elections, as the process halts once the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) comes into effect. Additionally, the Delhi Waqf Board currently lacks a CEO, and two authorised signatures are required to release the funds. This vacancy could further delay disbursements,” Rashidi said, said a PTI report.

He emphasised the need for the government to appoint a full-time CEO promptly to prevent interruptions in salary payments.

Rashidi revealed that he and other representatives have already approached the Delhi CM, Atishi, the Lieutenant Governor, and senior officials regarding the issue. “If we don’t receive satisfactory answers soon, we will launch a protest and will not end it until our salaries are disbursed,” he warned.

The pending salaries affect around 250 Imams, who earn ₹18,000 per month. Rashidi expressed concern over the hardship faced by these individuals due to the prolonged delay.
