Guwahati, November 1: Parthajit Baruah, an independent filmmaker and director, is set to unveil a powerful cinematic narrative that delves into one of Assam’s darkest chapters – the Nellie Massacre. Called ‘The Nellie Story,’ this film aims to highlight the chilling events of the Nellie Massacre to a wider audience, shedding light on the violent riots that unfolded in Assam’s history.

Assam has a history of violent protests and unrest, particularly related to ‘foreigners’ or illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. Among these tumultuous incidents, the most gruesome and horrifying one took place on February 18, 1983. During that fateful day, nearly 2,000 people belonging to the minority community of Bengali origin were mercilessly slaughtered within just six hours in the town of Nellie.

Recognizing the power of cinema as a medium to educate and inform the masses about historical events and important issues, Baruah took it upon himself to create ‘The Nellie Story.’ The film’s poster and trailer were officially unveiled during a poster release event held at the Gauhati Press Club. The event featured prominent figures such as acclaimed Indian female filmmaker from Assam, Manju Borah; Assamese actor, Kapil Borah; and the Editor-in-Chief of Pratidin Time, Nitumoni Saikia.

The film is set to hit theaters on December 8, 2023.  ‘The Nellie Story’ is expected to captivate audiences and ensure that the painful memories of the Nellie Massacre are never forgotten.
