New Delhi: In a significant political move, the opposition parties under the INDIA bloc have collectively decided to vote against the contentious Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024, which is set to be tabled in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, April 2. The opposition has termed the bill unconstitutional and anti-minority, alleging that it aims to divide the nation under the guise of legal amendments, reported the Roznamakhabrein.
Following a crucial meeting, leaders of key opposition parties, including Congress, DMK, Samajwadi Party, and Trinamool Congress, reached a unanimous decision to oppose the bill. Congress MP K.C. Venugopal strongly criticized the proposed amendment, stating, “This bill is against the fundamental principles of the Constitution and directly attacks religious freedom. We cannot accept it.”
Echoing similar sentiments, DMK MP Kanimozhi emphasized, “We stand united to protect secularism and the Constitution. This bill is an attempt to weaken the rights of minorities, and we will fight against it.”
The INDIA bloc leaders have accused the central government of using the bill as a tool to create division and marginalize the Muslim community. They have urged all opposition parties to stand firm in their opposition to prevent what they describe as an attack on constitutional values.
The upcoming parliamentary session is expected to witness heated debates as the opposition prepares to challenge the ruling government on the bill’s implications.
