Indian American Muslim Body Urges PM Modi to Withdraw ‘Anti-Muslim’ Waqf Bill, Warns of Chaos

An Indian American Muslim organization has strongly urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to withdraw the proposed Waqf Amendment Bill, calling it discriminatory and warning of potential unrest.
In an open letter, Dr. M. Qutubuddin of the American Indian Muslims Association (AIMA) expressed deep concern over rising communal divisions and violence against Muslims in India. The letter highlighted that India, described as their “Janmabhoomi, Matrubhoomi, and Pavitra Bhoomi” (birthland, motherland, and sacred land), is witnessing growing polarization, with Muslims facing daily discrimination and atrocities.
The organization criticized the government for introducing the bill without consulting opposition parties or Muslim representatives, calling it a direct attack on the community. It questioned why only Muslim endowments were targeted while similar measures were not proposed for Hindu, Sikh, or Christian institutions. The letter suggested the move was politically motivated to appease the majority vote bank but was tarnishing India’s global image.
Warning of further unrest, AIMA stressed that introducing the Waqf Bill in the current climate could escalate tensions and lead to violence. It urged the Prime Minister to withdraw the bill to prevent social discord and loss of life.
The appeal adds to growing opposition against the proposed amendments, with political parties and civil society groups also voicing concerns over its implications.
