Indian Leaders Rally Behind Priyanka Gandhi After Israeli Envoy Criticizes Her Remarks on Gaza Genocide

New Delhi — Prominent politicians, journalists, and activists have expressed strong support for Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra after Israeli Ambassador to India Reuven Azar accused her of “shameful deceit” for condemning Israel’s ongoing military actions in Gaza, which she termed a “genocide.”, reported the Hindustan Times.
In a statement on X, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh denounced the envoy’s language, calling it “totally unacceptable” and accusing the Modi government of “extreme moral cowardice” in refusing to speak against Israel’s destruction of Gaza over the last 18–20 months.
Congress media chief Pawan Khera described Azar’s remarks as “unprecedented and intolerable,” warning that it was a direct affront to Indian democracy. He urged External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar to respond to what he called a “public attempt to intimidate” a sitting Member of Parliament.
Gaurav Gogoi, Congress’s Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha, said the envoy’s comments amounted to a “serious breach of privilege” and asserted that the Indian Parliament should not remain silent, even if the government chooses to.
Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi accused the Israeli envoy of using “intimidating language” toward Priyanka Gandhi and urged the Indian government to respond firmly, suggesting a possible summoning or reprimand. He further alleged that the Modi government admires Israel’s political model and might even “enjoy” such remarks.
Award-winning journalist Rana Ayyub, senior journalist Arfa Khanam Sherwani, and actor Swara Bhasker amplified Gandhi’s statements, reiterating her criticism of global silence on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
In her post, Gandhi stated:
“The Israeli state is committing genocide. It has murdered over 60,000 people, 18,430 of whom were children. It has starved hundreds to death including many children and is threatening to starve millions.”
She also condemned the killing of five Al Jazeera journalists, calling it a “heinous crime” aimed at silencing truth through “violence and hatred.”
Responding to her, Ambassador Azar claimed that Israel had killed “25,000 Hamas terrorists” and argued that civilian deaths were the result of Hamas’s use of human shields, attacks on civilians, and rocket fire.
The controversy has sparked fresh debate on India’s stance regarding the Israel–Palestine conflict and the limits of diplomatic engagement when foreign envoys publicly criticize elected Indian representatives.
