Indian Sikh Woman Faces Deportation After Conversion and Marriage in Pakistan

New Delhi: A 52 year old woman from Punjab faces deportation to India after her arrest in Pakistan over an expired visa following her conversion to Islam and marriage to a local resident.

Sarabjit Kaur, a resident of Amanipur village in Kapurthala district, travelled to Pakistan on November 4, 2025 as part of a 1,932 member Sikh jatha attending Guru Nanak’s birth anniversary. The group returned to India on November 13. Kaur remained behind after the pilgrimage ended.

On November 5, a day after entering Pakistan, she embraced Islam and married Nasir Hussain, a resident of Sheikhupura. She adopted the name Noor Hussain, as recorded in the nikahnama. A video of the marriage document later circulated online. In the video, she stated familiarity with Hussain for nine years and referred to an earlier meeting during work in Dubai. She also stated divorce status and motherhood of two sons from a previous marriage.

Pakistani authorities arrested Kaur and Hussain on January 4 in Pehre Wali village near Nankana Sahib. A joint team from the Intelligence Bureau and local police took action after confirming her single entry tourist visa had expired. Officials also cited incomplete immigration details, including missing nationality and passport information, which delayed efforts to trace her movements.

Ramesh Singh Arora, president of the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee and a Punjab minister, confirmed preparations for her deportation through the Attari Wagah border.

Residents from her home village described her as reclusive. Local accounts referred to multiple cases linked to her family in Sultanpur Lodhi, raising questions around the police verification process before travel clearance.

Authorities earlier listed her as missing due to lack of exit or re entry records. Her location emerged only after the marriage and visa violation came to light.
