Mass Objections Target Muslim Voters in Indore, Spark Anger and Legal Concerns

Indore: Anger and disbelief have spread across Muslim neighbourhoods in Indore after bulk objections were filed seeking deletion of thousands of Muslim voters from the electoral roll.

The objections were submitted under Form 7 during the Special Intensive Revision process. Across the eight Assembly segments of the Indore parliamentary seat, 11,682 Form 7 applications have been uploaded so far. Local leaders estimate the actual number exceeds 50,000, as many offline applications are yet to be entered.

In Bijalpur, 81 year old Fakir Mohamed, who has voted in every Lok Sabha election for six decades, received notice that his citizenship was under question. At least 53 voters from his colony, all Muslims, faced similar objections. Booth level officers later verified them as Indian citizens.

In Chandan Nagar, over 5,000 of 16,000 voters in one ward faced objections. In Khajrana, 7,000 of 40,000 Muslim voters were targeted in a single ward. In another ward, more than half of 11,000 Muslim voters received Form 7 notices.

Several complainants admitted links with BJP workers. Some residents said their personal details were used without consent to file objections. Booth level officers reported that over 90 percent of claims, such as voters shifting residence, proved false after verification.

Under current rules, any voter in the same Assembly constituency may file objections. Each case requires a hearing and document verification before deletion.

Local Congress leaders have demanded action against those filing unverified complaints. Police have recorded statements, while election officials maintain that due validation will take place.

For many Muslim families, the process has meant repeated visits to officials and submission of decades old documents to protect their right to vote.
