Instead of Rewarding, Govt. Demolishes Rat-hole Miner Wakeel Hassan’s House

New Delhi, Feb. 29: The residence of Wakeel Hassan, a rat-hole miner who was instrumental in rescuing 41 laborers trapped in Uttarkashi’s Silkyara tunnel in November last, has been razed by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA). According to the DDA, the destruction was done as part of the village of Khajoori Khas’ planned development. During the drive, a number of additional residences in the vicinity were also destroyed.

In a video message, Hassan accused the authorities of demolishing his house without any notice. “My house is the only thing I asked for as an award (for Uttarakhand rescue operation), but DDA razed my home without any notice. He said he was assured by the government that his house wouldn’t be touched, but it was razed anyway,” Hassan said.

Hassan also mentioned that he had to visit the police station in connection with the incident. Munna Qureshi, another member of the rescue team, who was present in the video, claimed that they were beaten up by the police.
